white gold and diamond eternity ring

For the fiftieth wedding anniversary, the golden wedding anniversary, one would obviously offer a jewel or an object in gold.  If a man's wife did not already have a diamond-set wedding band or eternity ring, this would be the time to offer one rather than waiting another ten years for the diamond anniversary!  A love medal stamped "plus qu’hier et bien moins que demain", created in 1907 by Alphonse Augis, was and still is a popular gift from a man to his wife in France, though it's starting to lose ground to the increasingly popular Trinity diamond ring.  The words come from the poem L'éternelle chanson by Rosemonde Rostand (née Gérard, wife of Edmond Rostand who wrote Cyrano de Bergerac) ‘...........car vois tu chaque jour je t’aime d'avantage – aujourd’hui plus qu’hier et bien moins que demain' (...you see, every day I love you more - more than yesterday and less even than tomorrow)

L'éternelle chanson - The eternal song

When you are old and I am old,
When my blond hair will be white hair,
In the month of May, in the sunny garden,
We’ll go and warm our old trembling limbs.
As the renewal sets our hearts in joy,
We'll still believe ourselves to be young lovers,
And I’ll smile at you while shaking my head,
And we’ll make an adorable old couple.
We’ll look at each other, sitting under our trellis,
With small eyes, tender and sparkling,
When you are old and I am old,
When my blond hair will be white hair.

On our familiar bench, all greenish with moss,
On the bench of old, we'll return to chat,
We'll have a tender and very sweet joy,
Each sentence often ending in a kiss.
How many times have I said "I love you"?
And so with great care we'll recount them.
We'll remember again a thousand things, even
Sweet little nothings which we'll ramble on.
A ray will descend, with a soft caress,
Amongst our white hair, all pink, to rest,
When on our old bench all greenish with moss,
On the bench of old, we'll return to chat.

And as every day I love you more,
Today more than yesterday and less even than tomorrow,
What will facial wrinkles matter then

If the same roses perfume our route?
Think of all the springtimes stocked in our hearts
These memories of mine will be yours too.
Those common memories entwine us all the more
And constantly between us weave other links.
It’s true, we'll be old, very old, weakened by age,
But stronger each day I'll squeeze your hand
For you see, every day I love you more,
Today more than yesterday and less even than tomorrow.

And of this dear love that passes like a dream,
I want to keep everything at the bottom of my heart,
Remember, if I can, the impression too brief
To savour it slowly again later.
I bury everything that comes from it like a miser,
Hoarding with ardour for my old age;
I will be rich then of a rare wealth
For I’ll have kept all the gold of my young loves
And so of this past of happiness which is finishing,
My memory will sometimes hand me back the sweetness;
For of this dear love that passes like a dream
I will have preserved it all at the bottom of my heart.

When you are old and I am old,
When my blond hair will be white hair,
In the month of May, in the sunny garden,
We’ll go and warm our old trembling limbs.
As the renewal sets our hearts in joy

We'll still believe in the joyful days of old,
And I'll smile at you while shaking my head
And you'll speak to me of love in quavering words

We’ll look at each other, sitting under our trellis,
With our eyes full of the tears of our twenties,
When you are old and I am old,
When my blond hair will be white hair.

Sur le banc d'autrefois nous reviendrons causer;

Et sans cesse entre nous tissent d'autres liens ;

Ma mémoire parfois me rendra la douceur ;

Book - Traditional French Jewellery - order here direct from the author

Dear collectors, auctioneers, dealers and jewellery lovers,

You have visited the site www.bijouxregionaux.com which since
2009 has listed all regional and traditional French jewellery, without advertising and without sales. By popular demand, this website is now finally available as a book, much more complete and with many new photos and texts that are not on the site. I traveled more than 4,500 km in 2020 to visit the various collectors and museums of France and to photograph, weigh, measure and examine their jewellery.

Large format of 23.5 x 30 cm, 304 pages, hardcover and fully illustrated with over 1300 jewels in color, this book is the first complete book on French regional jewellery and corrects the many errors and gaps observed in the other references and presents other regional jewels hitherto unknown to the public. You will find eight full pages on Breton pins and fibulae and many other jewels in museums and private collections that are not on this website. Over four months of research has gone into making the chapter on hallmarks the most reliable ever seen - clear illustrations of hallmarks have been made especially for this volume. And for the first time, collectors will have access to a complete list of all the assay office symbols, small signs withn the hallmarks that identify in which city the jewellery was hallmarked. The opening and closing dates since 1798 of the hallmark offices are also listed for the first time, allowing, with the office symbol, to better date your jewellery.

The print run of this book is very limited, which is why I recommend you order early.  You will love this book I have had nothing but compliments and many clients have ordered more to offer as gifts.
